President Tinubu Affirms Oyebanji’s Second-Term Ticket in Birthday Message, Silences Speculations

December 21, 2025

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has put to rest lingering beerpalour speculations around the Ekiti State governorship ticket as he openly affirmed that Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji has secured the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination for a second term.

The affirmation came on Saturday in a birthday message issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, as Governor Oyebanji marked his 58th birthday.

In the congratulatory message, President Tinubu not only celebrated Oyebanji’s personal milestone but also clearly stated that the Ekiti governor “has already secured the All Progressives Congress’ nomination to contest for a second term in office in 2026.”

The presidential acknowledgment effectively douses the wave of rumours and political conjectures, making the rounds by followers of a disqualified aspirant over the APC ticket in Ekiti State.

President Tinubu, in the message, reflected on Governor Oyebanji’s long-standing contributions to the development of Ekiti State, tracing his public service journey from his role as Secretary to the Committee on the Creation of Ekiti State to his various strategic positions in government.

The President recalled that Oyebanji served as Special Adviser and later Chief of Staff to Ekiti’s first civilian governor, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo, before becoming Commissioner for Integration and Intergovernmental Affairs during Dr Kayode Fayemi’s first term. He also served as Secretary to the State Government before his election as governor in 2022.

Commending his performance in office, President Tinubu highlighted the infrastructural strides recorded under Oyebanji’s administration, with particular emphasis on agriculture and aviation.

He specifically congratulated the governor on the completion of the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Airport in Ado-Ekiti and the commencement of commercial flight operations, describing it as a major milestone for the state.

The President wished Governor Oyebanji many more years in good health and continued impactful leadership for Ekiti State.

The presidential message, coming at such a critical time, is widely seen as a strong political signal that reinforces Governor Oyebanji’s standing within the APC and further settles the question of the party’s flagbearer ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

In a statement released on Thursday, November 14, 2025, the caucus said such claims are baseless and should be ignored by every well-meaning member of the public. “Since the successful conduct of our governorship primary on October 27 and the ratification by authorised delegates on October 29, some mischief makers have been whispering that the party will not submit Governor Oyebanji’s name to INEC. This is completely false,” the statement read. The caucus emphasized that the APC operates according to a clearly defined timetable, which specifies the dates for submissio...
