…Total Debt Portfolio Stands At N953bn
…Ben Bruce-Murray Not On The List
Prominent Nigerians and their entities topped the “chronic debtors” list released at the weekend by the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).
As directed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), AMCON published a list containing 100 out of a total of 217 “chronic debtors” in their books, including firms and individuals. The total debt stands at N935.43 billion.
The list contained 100 entities owned by prominent Nigerians like Ifeanyi Uba, Wale Babalakin, Senator Buruji Kashamu, Uwamu Adolor and Badamosi Shehu.
Seawolf sat atop the list with a debt of N160.09 billion. The loan was originally taken by the company from First Bank of Nigeria and was bought by AMCOM in December 2011, followed by Ifeanyi Uba’s Capital Oil and Gas Industries Limited with a loan of N104.80 billion from Union Bank, Skye Bank, Zenith Bank, Intercontinental Bank and First Bank while Tanzila Petroleum Limited owned by Badamosi Shehu, Badamosi Safiyah and Badamosi Abdulmalik is owing N49.23 billion which AMCON bought from the now rested Intercontinental Bank and Guaranty Trust Bank.
Resort International Limited owned by Babalakin Olawale Bolanle has a debt of N36.30 billion got from First Bank, Zenith Bank and Enterprise Bank.
Hotel De Island, Kasmal Properties, Island Auto & NACOIL owned by Senator Kashamu Buruji is indebted to AMCON to the tune of N10.80 billion, a loan which was initially obtained from the defunct Oceanic Bank.
The decision to overtly bare the names of its debtors came barely days after the siege on the property of Senator Ben Murray-Bruce -Silverbird Productions Limited, Silverbird Showtime Limited and Silverbird Galleria Limited – over a debt of N11 billion.
Surprisingly, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, whose assets were seized a few days ago over N11 billion debt, is not on the list.
A statement issued by the corporation said: “Further to our various publications advising debtors to come and settle their obligations with us, and in line with the directive of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) instructing us to publish the list of 217 chronic debtors.
“We hereby present a list of 100 out of a total of 12,744 obligors on our books, being the first batch of many to be published. The listed debtors are hereby advised to engage us for resolution of their unpaid obligations.”
The corporation, which totalled the amount owed by the debtors to N953.43 billion, also urged those listed “to engage us for resolution of their unpaid obligations.”
It would be recalled that AMCON has taken over the assets of Silverbird Group and Afrijet over N11 billion and N10 billion debts, respectively.
