Ekiti 2018: Buruji Kashamu meets Obasanjo to plot against PDP candidate

In what appears like the coming together of two sworn enemies to achieve a common goal, the duo of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Buruji Kashamu met a few days ago to strategize on ways to stop the Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose from installing a successor in the next year governorship election.

Obasanjo, it should be recalled had hinged his leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the recognition of Buruji Kashamu as Southwest zonal leader of the party, saying then that; “I cannot and I will not subscribe to a wanted habitual criminal being installed as my zonal leader in the party; a criminal for whom extradition has been requested by the US Government.”

In a bid to nail Kashamu, who used to be Obasanjo’s political associate, the former President had in a letter dated January 7, 2014, sent six incriminating documents to the then President Goodluck Jonathan and the leadership of the Peoples PDP to support his claim that he (Kashamu) was wanted in the United States of America over a drug related offence.

However, three sources claimed that Buruji Kashamu was at Obasanjo’s Hill-Top mansion in Abeokuta, Ogun State four days ago on the former president’s invitation.

Kashamu was accompanied to the meeting by two of his associates, who were not allowed into the meeting with Obasanjo.

“We were shocked to the bone when we saw Prince Buruji Kashamu being ushered into Baba’s residence because here’s the same Kashamu that he (Obasanjo) accused of being a drug baron and wanted in the US.

“It was later that we heard that his (Buruji) coming to see Baba was to perfect how to use what they called the ‘Ondo Option’ to frustrate the chances of whoever Governor Fayose presents as the PDP candidate in the 2018 governorship election,” one of the three sources said.

Another of the sources also disclosed that Obasanjo impressed it upon Kashamu to remain in the PDP and be causing trouble in Ogun and Ekiti States, using frivolous court orders as done in the past.

“Baba is interested in Ekiti and Ogun States governorship elections and he wants Buruji Kashamu to help him play the spoiler role as usual. You know in Baba’s political game, there is no morality, he can dine and wine with anyone just to achieve his aim. That’s I believe is the reason he is now dealing with the same Kashamu that he called a known habitual criminal wanted abroad for crime that must not be treated with reverence,” said the source.

Mrs. Omolayo, who was warmly received with an Ọ̀wọ̀ song by jubilant party members, expressed appreciation to her ward for the support they gave her when she initially declared her intention to contest for governor. She explained that her decision to step down for Governor Oyebanji was informed by his wide acceptability across the state, sterling performances in office, and commitment to Ekiti’s growth and development, which she described as derivatives of continuity. While addressing the crowd, Mrs. Omolayo urged party members in Eporo Ward...

Ignore Rumours: APC Confirms Governor Oyebanji’s Name to Be Submitted to INEC on January 16, 2026

…As APC Spokesperson Reiterates Official Candidate List Ahead of Publication The APC Integrity Caucus has moved to dismiss what it describes as a reckless and senseless rumour being circulated by a few individuals posing as party members. The gossip, they said, claims that the party “does not intend to submit” the name of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In a statement released on Thursday, November 14, 2025, the caucus said such claims are baseless and should be ignored by every well-meaning member of the public. “Since the successful conduct of our governorship primary on October 27 and the ratification by authorised delegates on October 29, some mischief makers have been whispering that the party will not submit Governor Oyebanji’s name to INEC. This is completely false,” the statement read. The caucus emphasized that the APC operates according to a clearly defined timetable, which specifies the dates for submissio...
