Students under the Aegis of Combined Leadership of Ekiti Students' Movement on Tuesday commended the Ekiti State governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose for the passage into law of a bill prescribing death penalty for cultists in the state.

Members of National Association of Nigerian Students' Joint Campus Committee and the leadership of the Ekiti State University, College of Education Ikere Ekiti, Federal Polythecnic, Ado Ekiti, and College of Health Technology, Ijero Ekiti Students' Union Government gave the commendation during a solidarity rally to the Ekiti State governor's office today.

The student leaders who started the rally in their hundreds from Fajuyi Park area of Ado-Ekiti marched to the governor's office with banners and placards appreciating Mr. Fayose for saving their lives by criminalising cultism in Ekiti institutions.

National President of the Federation of Ekiti State Students' Union (FESSU) Comrade Adewumi Peters who spoke on behalf of the students said the solidarity visit was to applaud the unwavering commitment of Ekiti State government towards combating terrorism amongst the Ekiti populace in general and eradicating cultism amongst students in particular.
Adewumi thanked the government for seeing into students' welfare as well as setting up machinery that will ensure the protection of lives and properties of Ekiti Students.
Another student leader and Chairman, NANS/JCC Ekiti Axis, Comrade Owolabi Temitayo in his address appreciated the governor for having the safety of Ekiti citizens and students at heart assuring the Ayodele Fayose administration of their continuous support.
Addressing the students on behalf of the state governor, Ekiti State deputy governor, Prof. Kolapo Olusola thanked the students for giving massive support to the government in tackling criminal activities in the state. Referring to the success the anti grazing law earlier passed by the EKHA has become, Prof. Olusola said other states who chastised the law in the beginning are now asking for its template so it could be enforced in their states too.
Olusola who said Ekiti is lucky to have a proactive governor who stands tall amongst his peers and in the face of challenges added that the Ekiti anti grazing bill is being replicated in Plateau, Benue and other states in Nigeria.
Recalling how students of Obafemi Awolowo University waged an enduring war against cultism after a former students' leader named Africa was murdered by cultists in the school, Prof. Olusola charged the students to go back to tertiary institutions in Ekiti and inform their colleagues that their destinies is in their hands and never should they allow a group of miscreants destroy it.
"It is good that you have come here to appreciate the governor for coming up with this law, but I want to challenge you to take back the campaign to our campuses, let them know the state has zero tolerance for cultism, we have taken the campaign to our secondary schools, students should be seen rising up to support this anti cultism law, go to your campuses and support this law and that will be the best for us in Ekiti State. Ekiti has been adjudged as one of the most peace States in Nigeria, we are not ready to let go of that feat", the deputy governor said.
It would be recalled that few weeks back, cult related clashes claimed no less than two lives on the premises of the Ekiti State University, this infuriated the state governor and made him send a bill prescribing death penalty for cultists in Ekiti State. The bill was expressly passed by the Ekiti State House of Assembly and signed into law by governor Ayodele Fayose yesterday.
