Ekiti People Will Resist Imposition of Candidate, Group Warns Buhari

An Ekiti-based pro-democracy group, Ekiti Democracy Vanguard (EDV) has warned President Muhammadu Buhari against supporting the imposition of a candidate in the coming Governorship election in the state, saying “it will be resisted with unprecedented civil action ever to be seen in the state”.

In a statement issued at the weekend, in Ado Ekiti , the State Capital by its Public Communication Officer, Iyabode Ogunleye,  the group lamented what it called  “obscene name-throwing by a governorship  aspirant who happens to  be a serving minister in the Buhari government that he has been anointed as the next governor by  the President.”

The group expressed shock and disbelief that the President has allowed the conduct of the aspirant go unchecked, a situation that has  heightened tension within the State and which may further  jeopardise the chances of the All Progressives Congress (APC)  as a credible alternative to the misery caused the by ruling party, the PDP ,  in the state.

Ogunleye said: “The Minister and his aides have gone on rooftops to announce that the results of both his party's primary and the governorship elections in the state will be written from Abuja.

“He came to Ekiti during the yuletide period and lied that the President gave him N350 million to share as yuletide gifts. Since he is not surefooted and lacks the much needed support from Ekiti people, the Minister has advertised  photos from every dinner, every meeting he has ever had with the President as the Certificate to the governorship position and a confirmation of his wicked plot against the wishes of  Ekiti people.

“But we will like to remind those planning to impose a rejected candidate on our people that the chain of events that led to former President Jonathan’s exit from Aso Villa started from Ekiti. We are pleading that they should not allow such history repeat itself,”

The group alleged that  the Minister is currently parading a list of APC delegates “which is totally  different from the one submitted to Abuja in 2014. Such a list, according to Ogunleye, “will be resisted with every legitimate and legal means.”

“We again plead that the APC should put its house in order and present a credible candidate and rescue our state. For the umpteenth time, no party will win by imposition in Ekiti. A candidate who is already seen as an enemy of the people,  an album of photo opportunities with  the president notwithstanding, will not fool our people this time.

‘”Lastly, Nigeria is already tension-soaked,  we would like to admonish President Buhari not to cause another conflagration. We advise those behind this plot to stop and study  Ekiti people's political history and their history of resistance to injustice which dates back to the 18th century.

October 25, 2025 A former governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Mrs. Atinuke Oluremi Omolayo (née Okeya), who was duly screened and cleared by the party’s National Screening Committee, has demonstrated uncommon party loyalty by stepping down for Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji and actively participating in the delegate congress held today in her Eporo Ward, Emure Local Government Area. Mrs. Omolayo, who was warmly received with an Ọ̀wọ̀ song by jubilant party members, expressed appreciation to her ward for the support they gave her when she initially declared her intention to contest for governor. She explained that her decision to step down for Governor Oyebanji was informed by his wide acceptability across the state, sterling performances in office, and commitment to Ekiti’s growth and development, which she described as derivatives of continuity. While addressing the crowd, Mrs. Omolayo urged party members in Eporo Ward...

Ignore Rumours: APC Confirms Governor Oyebanji’s Name to Be Submitted to INEC on January 16, 2026

…As APC Spokesperson Reiterates Official Candidate List Ahead of Publication The APC Integrity Caucus has moved to dismiss what it describes as a reckless and senseless rumour being circulated by a few individuals posing as party members. The gossip, they said, claims that the party “does not intend to submit” the name of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In a statement released on Thursday, November 14, 2025, the caucus said such claims are baseless and should be ignored by every well-meaning member of the public. “Since the successful conduct of our governorship primary on October 27 and the ratification by authorised delegates on October 29, some mischief makers have been whispering that the party will not submit Governor Oyebanji’s name to INEC. This is completely false,” the statement read. The caucus emphasized that the APC operates according to a clearly defined timetable, which specifies the dates for submissio...
