Fayose's Trial: After arrest and detention, EFCC "forces" witness to write new statement against Fayose


A few days after a Prosecution Witness in the trial of former Ekiti State governor , Mr Ayodele Fayose contradicted his extrajudicial statement to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, by telling the court that he did not move cash from Afao Ekiti, Fayose's hometown on the 16th of June 2014 and that the two vehicles he used to drive in Zenith Bank were grounded  on that day, the witness has been made to write a new statement, alleging that he was threatened by the former governor.


The witness, Mr Adewale Aladegbola Clement,  a former driver to Zenith Bank Ado -Ekiti branch, who gave evidence on Friday, as the second witness was arrested by the EFCC and detained for hours last Friday, after giving testimony before Justice Mojisola Olatoregun.


On Friday evening, his wife, Olajumoke Aladegbola, had raised the alarm that she couldn’t reach her husband since 9 am on Friday morning, describing the development as unusual and worrisome.


Speaking to journalist  in Ado Ekiti, Mrs. Aladegbola, who cried profusely, said;  “I have not seen my husband since Tuesday when he left Ado Ekiti to attend to the EFCC vs Fayose matter. And since 9am this morning, I have not been able to reach him on phone."


While giving evidence, the witness had said he was told to lie by the bank Cash Officer, Okemute Oputu and that on April 16, 2015, the Zenith Bank bullion van was grounded and there was no operations.


EFCC counsel, Mr Rotimi Jacobs, SAN,  who was obviously jolted had told the court that he will be asking for adjournment saying; "My Lord, it looks as if this witness might become hostile as he is making statements absent from his extra judicial statement in the proof of evidence." 


The defence counsel, Mr Ola Olanipekun, SAN, and Olalekan Ojo, SAN,  opposed the application for adjournment, saying the prosecution can not ask for adjournment based on the fact that his witness was not cooperating.


However,  after further argument from the prosecuting counsel,  the judge Mrs Olatoregun agreed to adjourn proceedings and continue with the witness exam in chief on the 14th of May at 1pm.


A few hours ago, information reached us that the EFCC had filed a new statement made last Friday, by Aladegbola, claiming that he changed his evidence because he was allegedly threatened and promised cash by Fayose.


Aladegbola, who was said to have spent over 10 hours in EFCC's Ikoyi, Lagos office, was only released and allowed to go home after he made the new statement.


A source in the EFCC told our reporter that the new statement was meant to contradict Aladegbola's evidence of last Friday, which contradicted his extra-judicial statement.
