Ekiti State government has reiterated its readiness to partner with relevant stakeholders in its quest to eradicate every form of human trafficking and other related social vices.
The Commissioner for Information, Tourism and Values Orientation, Aare Muyiwa Olumilua while speaking in Ado Ekiti at a symposium tagged: “Human Trafficking: A Menace To Socio-Economic Development of the Society”, organized by the International Federation of Female Lawyers FIDA (Nigeria) Ekiti branch, as part of activities marking this year’s Law Week, said that a lot could be achieved if relevant stakeholders join hands with government to end this scourge.
While lamenting the negative impact of this abuse on young minds, Olumilua said there is a direct link between societal development and the mind-set of its people. Hence, all hands must be on deck in order to create awareness, and sensitize the populace on the dangers of this vice.
Explaining that human trafficking is barbaric, and could be in various forms, the Commissioner described as pathetic, a situation where the victims actually pay agents themselves in order to be trafficked, with the erroneous belief of getting greener pastures outside the country. He added that funds of this nature were as high as five hundred thousand naira or more, and could have been invested in profitable businesses within the country.
The Commissioner who expressed displeasure at the growing rate of child trafficking in the country, lamented that such children were denied the opportunity to be educated and most times forced into labour. He however added that the office of the First Lady, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice have been doing excellently in their efforts at curtailing such acts, and other related vices in the State.
