Afraid of being probed for stolen billions, Akpabio plots removal of EFCC Zonal Head ...As top APC chieftains dump him

These are certainly not the best of times for former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akapbio, as he is now running from pillar to post, plotting the removal of the Zonal Head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Garba Gungum, over his insistence on carrying out the investigation of his (Akpabio) eight years tenure as governor to a logical conclusion.

This is also as Senator Akpabio's case challenging the election of Senator Chris Ekpeyong as the duly elected Senator representing Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District is falling apart like packs of cards at the Tribunal currently sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state capital.

To add to his woes, chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State, including the party's governorship candidate, Nsima Ekere, Senators John Akpanudoedeghe, Ita Enang, Don Etiebet, Chief Sony Jackson, Obong Umana Umana, among others have all fallen out with him and have sworn never to have anything to do with him.

Faced with these dire situations, alone, rejected dejected and afraid that he will be probed and probably jailed for the billions of Naira he allegedly stole from the state in his eight years rule, Akpabio from exclusive details gleaned from an insider, is said to be secretly plotting the removal of the Head of the EFCC Zonal Office in Akwa Ibom State, Garba Gungum.

According to the source, Senator Akpabio is said to have complained that the Zonal Head was not protecting him enough and as such, is afraid he may be probed and sent to jail.

“Akpabio is alone; he is like a political leper now as no one wants to touch him. His APC colleagues are all out for his jugular and the EFCC Zonal Head, Garba Gungum whom he has been boasting is in his pocket, is not given to his boastful antics and has distanced himself from him too.

"He is so afraid and is running from pillar to post now, plotting to have the EFCC Zonal Head removed," the source said.

Speaking with our reporter, an official source of the EFCC, who preferred anonymity said that the anti-graft agency will not be intimidated by Akpabio’s desperate moves and that the "Zonal Head  is a hard-core professional, who enjoys the confidence of his bosses in Abuja. Therefore, Akpabio’s plot will certainly fail."

October 25, 2025 A former governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Mrs. Atinuke Oluremi Omolayo (née Okeya), who was duly screened and cleared by the party’s National Screening Committee, has demonstrated uncommon party loyalty by stepping down for Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji and actively participating in the delegate congress held today in her Eporo Ward, Emure Local Government Area. Mrs. Omolayo, who was warmly received with an Ọ̀wọ̀ song by jubilant party members, expressed appreciation to her ward for the support they gave her when she initially declared her intention to contest for governor. She explained that her decision to step down for Governor Oyebanji was informed by his wide acceptability across the state, sterling performances in office, and commitment to Ekiti’s growth and development, which she described as derivatives of continuity. While addressing the crowd, Mrs. Omolayo urged party members in Eporo Ward...

Ignore Rumours: APC Confirms Governor Oyebanji’s Name to Be Submitted to INEC on January 16, 2026

…As APC Spokesperson Reiterates Official Candidate List Ahead of Publication The APC Integrity Caucus has moved to dismiss what it describes as a reckless and senseless rumour being circulated by a few individuals posing as party members. The gossip, they said, claims that the party “does not intend to submit” the name of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In a statement released on Thursday, November 14, 2025, the caucus said such claims are baseless and should be ignored by every well-meaning member of the public. “Since the successful conduct of our governorship primary on October 27 and the ratification by authorised delegates on October 29, some mischief makers have been whispering that the party will not submit Governor Oyebanji’s name to INEC. This is completely false,” the statement read. The caucus emphasized that the APC operates according to a clearly defined timetable, which specifies the dates for submissio...
