Impeached Ekiti Former Dep. Speaker Seeks Refugee Status In Canada Using False Claims

Impeached Ekiti Former Dep.  Speaker Seeks Refugee Status In Canada Using False Claims

After making over N100 million as member and Deputy Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly,  Segun Adewumi,  who represented Ekiti West Constituency 1 in the immediate past House of Assembly is now in Canada,  seeking refugee status under false claims.

As deputy speaker,  Adewumi made about N2.5 million monthly while he received about N1.8 million as member of the House of Assembly.

Adewumi,  who travelled to Toronto,  Canada immediately after his tenure as member of the 5th Assembly ended, is said to have filed claim at the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) office, seeking refugee status on the ground that his life and those of his family members will not be safe if they return to Nigeria.

Sources in the known revealed that Adewumi lied that his residences in Ekiti were attacked by hoodlums and that he escaped with his wife and children by whiskers.

"He lied that his houses in Ado Ekiti and Erijiyan Ekiti were set ablaze by political thugs," one of the sources said.

Adewumi is also using the murder of his mother, Mrs Juliana Adewumi in Erijiyan Ekiti on March 31, 2013, as ground that his life and those of his family members were not safe in Nigeria.

"He is using his picture and that of his late mother as Display Picture (DP) on WhatsApp,  with inscription;  'forever in my mind' to further buttress his claim. Funny enough,  he didn't use the mother's picture as DP throughout his tenure as Assembly member," another source said.

A source also revealed that the impeached former deputy speaker lied that his father,  who died owing to his neglect, was murdered by political thugs.

It would be recalled that Mrs Juliana Adewumi and Murphy Jeje were murdered in Erijiyan Ekiti on March 31, 2013, during the first tenure of Dr.  Kayode Fayemi as governor of Ekiti State.

It was as compensation for the murder of his mother that Adewumi was handed the People's Democratic Party (PDP)  ticket to contest the House of Assembly.

Ironically,  Adewumi,  who was impeached as Deputy Speaker on May 24, 2018, was returned as Deputy Speaker by Fayemi, a few days to his inauguration as governor on October 16, 2018.

He holds the record of the only House of Assembly member in Ekiti State to have been impeached twice.

On May 24, 2018, Segun Adewumi was removed as Deputy Speaker after a motion moved by the Leader of Business, Akinyele Olatunji and seconded by Olayanju Olanrewaju .

Akinyele alleged that Adewumi was found to have indulged in activities capable of bringing the dignity and integrity of the House to disrepute.

Other allegations against the impeached deputy speaker were gross misconduct, lack of leadership qualities and acting in a way that could destabilize the state.

Again, three months after his reinstatement as Speaker, Adewumi was removed by the lawmakers  over allegations of gross misconduct.

The lawmakers replaced Adewumi with his closest friend, Olamiposi Omodara, who represented Irepodun/Ifelodun constituency I.

Also on April 16, 2019, the Ekiti State Assembly House of Assembly  banned Adewumi for six weeks for alleged legislative misconduct.

This was attributed to his undue interruption of the Speaker, Adeniran Alagbada, while presiding over the House at the plenary.

Mrs. Omolayo, who was warmly received with an Ọ̀wọ̀ song by jubilant party members, expressed appreciation to her ward for the support they gave her when she initially declared her intention to contest for governor. She explained that her decision to step down for Governor Oyebanji was informed by his wide acceptability across the state, sterling performances in office, and commitment to Ekiti’s growth and development, which she described as derivatives of continuity. While addressing the crowd, Mrs. Omolayo urged party members in Eporo Ward...

Ignore Rumours: APC Confirms Governor Oyebanji’s Name to Be Submitted to INEC on January 16, 2026

…As APC Spokesperson Reiterates Official Candidate List Ahead of Publication The APC Integrity Caucus has moved to dismiss what it describes as a reckless and senseless rumour being circulated by a few individuals posing as party members. The gossip, they said, claims that the party “does not intend to submit” the name of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In a statement released on Thursday, November 14, 2025, the caucus said such claims are baseless and should be ignored by every well-meaning member of the public. “Since the successful conduct of our governorship primary on October 27 and the ratification by authorised delegates on October 29, some mischief makers have been whispering that the party will not submit Governor Oyebanji’s name to INEC. This is completely false,” the statement read. The caucus emphasized that the APC operates according to a clearly defined timetable, which specifies the dates for submissio...
