The Ekiti State Government has reiterated its commitment to the welfare of workers with the implementation of the N70,000 new minimum wage set to commence on December 1, 2024.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji disclosed this during a media interaction in Ikere Ekiti, in response to the ongoing nationwide strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over non-implementation of the wage in some states. He assured workers that Ekiti State had fulfilled all necessary requirements to ensure a seamless rollout.
“In Ekiti State, we have signed an agreement with labour, and the implementation and payment of the new minimum wage will start on December 1. We couldn’t commence earlier because it was not budgeted for. However, I have now signed the appropriation budget that includes the new minimum wage, and we are good to go,” Governor Oyebanji said.
The governor clarified that the delay was procedural, adding that the state government and organized labour only finalized an agreement after the November salary had been paid.
“We reached an agreement with the labour leaders two weeks ago. Payment couldn’t have started earlier as it requires proper budgetary planning, but I know the NLC leadership in Ekiti is reasonable, and they understand the process,” he explained.
In a statement supporting the governor’s remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour Matters, Comrade Olukayode Fatomiluyi, assured workers that the state government had done everything necessary to avoid any disruption in industrial harmony.
“There will be no strike in Ekiti State. The government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with labour leaders on the new wage, and payment will begin as scheduled. The MoU also covers pensioners, ensuring equity for all,” Fatomiluyi stated.
The new wage policy, which takes effect in December, is part of Governor Oyebanji’s broader strategy to improve the living conditions of Ekiti State workers and retirees. It underscores his administration’s dedication to fostering a people-centered government.
