The Ekiti State Government has keyed into the recently launched ₦500 billion Offtake Guarantee Fund under the Produce for Lagos Program, a bold agricultural market intervention driven by the Lagos State Government.
At the official unveiling of the programme last Wednesday in Lagos, the Ekiti State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Ebenezer Boluwade, and the Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment and Cooperatives, Hon. Tayo Adeola, represented Governor Biodun Oyebanji, reaffirming Ekiti's readiness to plug directly into one of the nation’s largest food markets.
Speaking after the event, Hon. Boluwade described the initiative as timely and strategic, noting that agriculture, globally, is a market-driven business, and for any region to grow its food economy, structured access to markets like Lagos is non-negotiable.
“We’ve seen how countries like the US, China, and EU nations design their food systems around strong market linkages. In Nigeria, and especially for us in the Southwest, tapping into the Lagos market is the real game changer,” Boluwade said.
He disclosed that Ekiti has, in the last two farming seasons, cleared over 4,500 hectares of arable land, emerging as the leading rice producer in the Southwest, and the top poultry broiler-producing state under a single, government-led initiative.
In 2024, the Oyebanji-led administration also floated Ilu Eye Agro Trading and Aggregation Company Limited, a purpose-built platform for aggregating farm produce across clusters and opening up reliable channels between farmers and markets, both within and outside the state.
“Ilu Eye Agro ticks every box needed to key into the Produce for Lagos program. We are not just coming to the table, we’re coming prepared,” the Commissioner added.
According to him, the days ahead will see both states ironing out commercial modalities and finalising implementation plans with all key stakeholders.
“Our Governor believes in building practical linkages, and what we’re seeing with Lagos is exactly the kind of partnership that will unlock wealth for our farmers,” he concluded.
The Produce for Lagos program is designed to guarantee offtake and market access for farm produce targeted at the Lagos food ecosystem, providing sustainable value for producing states.
