ADO - EKITI
The Ekiti State Government has disclosed that no fewer than 150 youths have been trained through the Ekiti Broiler Outgrowers Production Scheme (EBOPS) as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen food security and create sustainable opportunities in agriculture.
Speaking on the government’s interventions between 2023 and 2024, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Ebenezer Boluwade, recalled how the Oyebanji-led administration stepped in during the poultry crisis when the cost of feed Inputs - especially maize - rose sharply, threatening the survival of many farms.
According to him, several poultry businesses were able to withstand the turbulence largely due to the timely support of the state government. “In fact, an award was given to His Excellency, Governor Biodun Oyebanji, in 2024 as the best governor that supported the livestock sector in the Southwest during the annual regional poultry show in Abeokuta, Ogun State,” Boluwade stated.
The Commissioner noted that more than 1,000 metric tonnes of maize were distributed free of charge to livestock farmers across various sub-sectors including poultry, fishery, piggery, sheep and goat rearing, as well as cattle production.
“Our plans for agricultural development in the state are structured to provide resilience and sustainability to the huge private sector investments that go into different sub-sectors,” he added.
The Commissioner assured that the Oyebanji administration will continue to invest in agriculture, not only to boost food sufficiency but also to create jobs and guarantee the survival of local farmers despite challenges in the sector.
